"Signal 30" is one of the best episodes of Mad Men for a number of reasons but my favorite is Ken's reveal as writer of sci-fi short stories. That ending, where he starts writing a story about a guy clearly inspired by Pete, is pure pathos.

The scene in Mad Men where Betty is worried Don is cheating, so she checks the phone bill and sees a number on there a bunch of times so she calls it and is relieved when a man picks up but then realizes it’s her therapist and that’s even worse is perfect storytelling. Perfect.

“Signal 30” was written by Frank Pierson, the screenwriter of Dog Day Afternoon and Cool Hand Luke, and directed by none other than Roger Sterling himself, John Slattery.
