Admin, Its not just students who need Maslow before Bloom. Teachers also need: 1) feel safe / supported 2) Volition/ sense of autonomy 3) attention/ appreciation 4) emotional connection/ relationship 5) value within the team

Teachers it is not just students that need words of affirmation, but your colleagues and even your admin need it. We are all humans first. Connecting and building strong relationships is a two way street. Don't expect others to do all the work!

One issue of classroom discipline is that it’s viewed as management & not as leadership. We manage things but lead people. Often times teachers may not feel like leaders, although you are in every since of the word. Youre a teacher of a subject, but a leader of students.

I would encourage any teacher thinking of becoming a principal to coach a sport for at least one year. I learned so much my first year coaching about dealing with parents, students, expectations, goal setting, organization, time management dealing with adversity, etc.

Some may think praise, compliments, and appreciation are not necessary for adults, But remember its not just that you are praising your staff, you're also saying I'm paying attention, I value you as a person & professional, & I value your work. can this really be said too often?

What if we could retain effective leaders & teachers in our schools. There is something to be said for consistency in building culture & imagine what we could do with the $10+ billion dollars spend on teacher attrition. Districts need to focus on morale, support & appreciation!

Admin, take time today to: *say hello to staff & students in the hall * check on teachers, especially if they have life events they’re dealing with * sit in on classes & leave note of praise * let staff know you appreciate them * ask what staff needs to succeed * encourage all

β€œI believe in you.” β€œYou matter.” β€œYou’ve got this, don’t give up.” β€œI appreciate you.” Today, decide to be the person who instills a positive belief in someone else. They may need to hear your encouraging words more than you know.

When I see posts questioning teachers being average, going through the motions, or losing their excellence, I think maybe they’re just tired. Maybe they lack the support & inspiration to rekindle that fire & passion they used to have. Maybe they need encouragement not judgement.

Why would a teacher make the best president: - They are actual public servants. - They are selfless. - They are experts in dealing with various mindsets. - They can accomplish the most w/ few resources and no support. -And teachers can handle ANYTHING.

As an admin, I valued teamwork as much as a stellar teacher. That’s because if greatness is performed in isolation, it does little to cultivate a dynamic school culture. But if you have a team of committed teachers to support, encourage, & motivate each other, it’s a game changer

Teachers have always worked under high stress which is why there has been a 50% turnover every 5 years. But now it is literally uncharted territory. Education is in need of many changes, but doing more for teachers has to be the priority or none of the other changes will matter.

Please remember that all those interactions you have with your students outside of the lesson really matter. The smiles… the eye contact… the jokes, the fist bumps… and the silliness…they’re all important. They remind kids that they matter. Those moments can mean the world.
