So went to start my new part time cleaning job today. Only 4 hours and summer cover but it pays more than my Classroom assistant role per hour. Even my 11 year could see the problem. Education is not valued properly nor are staff paid or valued adequate.

Languages are about broadening your outlook, making new discoveries, learning where words come from & how we're all connected, appreciating other traditions & points of view & celebrating a diverse world. Whatever else you're into, languages bring us together & take you further.

1. I remember going on a school trip I was about 8 yrs old.. My mum packed me a lunch...she made my favourites... Traditional, Turkish Cypriot Dolmas (stuffed vine leaves), Koftes (meatballs) and bread. When it was time to eat ... I sat on the grass with my class...

Word of the day is Zugzwang [tzoog-tzwung]: a situation in chess (and life) in which a move must be made, but each possible one will make the situation worse.

Why do some people say “aks” instead of “ask”? It’s not “just their accent” and it sure as hell isn’t a mispronunciation. There’s a linguistic reason and a cultural reason. Let’s quickly look at both:

@KevinAbroad1 People can have difficulty with specific language-learning methods, specific languages or language skills (even in their own language.) But saying that someone is “not good at learning languages” is like saying that someone is not good at learning.

The French word pamplemousse (one of my all-time favourites) derives from the Dutch ‘pompelmoes,’ probably constructed from pompel (‘big’ or ‘swollen’) + limoes (‘lemons’). So a French grapefruit is essentially a ‘fat lemon’ or, as the kids these days would say, a ‘chonky citrus’
