I wrote about the lack of administrative support for the liberal arts in The New York Times. The standard story we hear is that students don't want it. But a darker reality is that even when it wins big with students and donors it loses with those in power. nytimes.com/2025/07/17/opi…

Don't leave AI to the STEM folks. They are often far worse at getting AI to do stuff than those with a liberal arts or social science bent. LLMs are built from the vast corpus human expression, and knowing the history & obscure corners of human works lets you do far more with AI

These are systems that respond to human writing and (often) techniques that apply to human psychology. Everyone now has a machine that makes words, images, video, sound where the limit is often your own ability to imagine something new (or invoke old ideas others do not know).

The Math Olympiad is great, coding is important, accelerating science has tremendous value. But LLMs give a chance for both cultures to contribute in ways that have not been possible for a long time.

Yes. Writing is not a second thing that happens after thinking. The act of writing is an act of thinking. Writing *is* thinking. Students, academics, and anyone else who outsources their writing to LLMs will find their screens full of words and their minds emptied of thought.

Cancers often have 100s if not 1000s of unique mutations. Having a tech that can custom tune your immune response to your individual cancer would be a potential game changer. That’s what is being killed here.

Silicon Valley doesn’t “predict” the future. It picks the one it wants and then pours billions of dollars into making it happen. So when they say "AI will replace us", that’s not a helpful warning. It’s their business plan.

Last month I did a meditation circle with one of AZ’s best-known sovereign citizens, got my aura photo taken by a Trump-supporting psychic, and talked anti-vax with a “deschooling” advocate The upshot: Sedona’s hippie ranks are going right wing
