As you may have already seen, Flaco the Eurasian eagle-owl has passed away. I am sad beyond words. Flaco defied the odds and made quite a life for himself in the city over the past year. Along the way he came to mean so much to so many, including me. ❤️🦉

💔💔💔I awoke, here in Guatemala, to the heartbreaking news that our magnificent owl-king, Flaco, has died. 🧵 1/ newsroom.wcs.org/News-Releases/…

While the death of Flaco is a tragedy, each year 1 billion birds die in North America from window collisions, including thousands in Chicago alone. Each of these birds, down to the drabbest little flycatcher, is worthy of mourning. Window collisions are preventable. We must act.

Flaco spent his first 13 years primarily living for the benefit of people. As much as his story of survival and adaptation touched all of us, he was finally able to live for his own benefit in the past year. (Cont’d)

We will remember Flaco at the peak of his powers, on top of the world—an owl who inspired so many as he went from living in a tiny enclosure to owning the Manhattan skyline in less than a year. 🦉 ❤️

Beyond thrilled to share the new Urban Wildlife Information Network paper out today in PNASNews where we show that gentrification drives patterns of wildlife diversity in cities. #urbanecology #cameratrapping #mammals 🧵1/14 pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn…

How can we identify *future* #InvasiveSpecies? Come see my poster at #ESA2024 today to see how we can "crowdsource" the priority lists in a region to build a list of potential invaders. PS 47-115 (Wednesday Reserved:00)

"My hope is that students leave the class a little less nervous and possibly even excited about what is before them. I hope they leave inspired to be active in their education and strive to do more than collect facts, more than memorize." - ✍️ Professor of Biology David R. Bowne
