Last fall, I started a petition that got ~80,000 signatures calling for Professor Massad’s removal after he called 10/7 “awesome.” It took Columbia 6 MONTHS to condemn his rhetoric. In those 6 months, this justification of terrorism has become entirely normalized on campus.

Unless Columbia starts taking action & actually condemning rhetoric by professors/faculty who have worked to legitimize terrorism since 10/7, it means nothing. The pro-terror sentiment on campus didn’t come from nowhere - it was enabled by disguising it as academic discourse.

Columbia can't move forward because we share a community with people that normalize violence & hate crimes. If our fellow community members aren't willing to stand up against this, something as abhorrent as violence, how can the university ensure safety on an open campus?

I don't know who needs to hear this—too many members of Columbia's faculty, clearly—but hijacking planes isn't 'spectacular' (Slaughter) and October 7th isn't 'awesome' (Massad). Why are our universities alright with intellectualizing terrorism?
