Here a section of 1.5 cm wide of a painted surface was covered all around the edges by the frame, therefore protected from light. It is an early 19th century portrait with a grey background, that, we know now, it was much more colourful #PaintingsConservation #pigments #yellow

Some of my favourite pink fluorescence under UV light of a (carmine-like) pigment in a portrait of an elderly rabbi. This pigment was also seen in the chicks and lips of the sitter. And I love how some tiny impasto depicts old watering eyes #PaintingsConservation #art #portrait
