With proliferation of large databases research, it's inevitable that there's some misalignment of research ❓& dataset capabilities. Since I had to prep slides for 🗣️, thought I could share them if it's helpful for anyone conducting research or reviewing papers. A primer🧵:

2 incidents, 4 days apart, one with hundreds escaping poverty/war & one with 5 men who paid 250K to enjoy an extreme adventure, dying. First with no rescue efforts or media coverage; second with minute-to-minute coverage & billions spent in rescue efforts despite the odds #Titan

Even within the NSQIP family, 🏥participating in the pancreas-targeted registry had 39%⬇️in 30-day mortality & 41%⬇️in failure-to-rescue after Whipple than those in the "standard" registry. Self-selection of 🏥indicated higher-quality pancreas care. Henry Pitt, MD UAMS Department of Surgery

🧵/RCTs are the gold standard in⬇️ biases in📝. But often times, obtaining funding & enrolling based on honest power calculations is impossible, esp in Surgery. That means most📝are cohort studies, & I thought it’d be worth reviewing what one can do to best adjust for biases.
