@NonVerbalDebate North American yams or sweet potatoes are often unearthed by harvesting machines, but still require sorting and cleaning by hand. (Same for regular potatoes.) Here’s a video from Raquel who was sorting sweet potatoes in Livingston, CA.

@MJShanklinRN Brussels sprouts grow on a very tough, woody stem— which means workers need both strength and precision to avoid chopping injury. Here’s a video!

Allison B. Taylor These workers were picking peas in an area experiencing wildfires. Some varieties are harvested mechanically, but most involve hand harvest.

Aaliyah Talcott Asparagus requires bending and often causes repetitive strain injuries. This video is of an asparagus worker from Gonzalez, CA. Vid is from the end of harvest, she’s likely clearing the remaining few stems but it shows the mechanics of the labor involved.

@TracyLentz7 Strawberries are known as “stoop labor” as they require bending or kneeling. Most strawberry harvesters are paid by piece rates for volume picked, not by the hour.

Em Counting Charlie harvests turnips. He's paid piece rate — earns $1.50 every two buckets. Rushing is dangerous, you could easily lose a finger. (Sound on this video is interesting— snip snip!)

Torrey Here’s a picture from Parlier, CA (near Fresno) of a worker in the squash crop. It was 98 degrees but notice Amadeo is covering his skin with gloves and long sleeves. That’s because squash vines are intensely irritating to the skin, especially as they get dry, close to harvest.

Cats of Yore This is video is pecan but walnut harvesting is similar. A hydraulic machine is often used to shake the trees, bringing the ripe nuts down to be collected. They’re then mechanically hulled/cracked/shelled then processed by hand to remove shell debris.

Aaron Crossley Marisol sent this video of the garlic harvest in CA. The garlic is picked, cleaned up and placed into containers while the farm workers kneel. The ideal growing conditions for garlic means the harvest work is in extremely hot and dry conditions.

Michelle North American yams or sweet potatoes can be grown in hot dusty conditions or in muddy conditions like this. Ricardo sent this video of a rainy sweet potato harvest in Mississippi. At least he wasn’t hot!

I want to take a moment to try to explain what the heck’s happening here. (Hint: it’s galactically stupid) Why is Hochul pushing to gut the state’s climate law?!?!? 🧵

This is painful. This is horrible and feels a bit like a betrayal. But I have no choice. Bobby Kennedy Jr. was my friend and co-author. I feel terrible about revealing these things. But our democracy truly is in the balance…. #RFKJr gregpalast.com/i-was-on-the-p…
