Update: We are now tracking at least 180 fragments resulting from this event. We expect this number to increase in the coming days. We are actively analyzing the debris cloud to characterize it, identify a potential cause, and estimate the impact. More details to follow.

Slingshot is actively tracking 50+ objects associated with a debris-generating event following China’s launch of 18 G60 satellites on August 6th for its Thousand Sails mega constellation. We will continue to provide additional updates on this event as we analyze the data.

300 pieces of debris at 800km altitude multiplied by many future launches to deploy this constellation...has bad written all over it. The total debris could exceed that caused by the Fengyun-1C ASAT test and linger for many decades.

This is a great image (of a bad event). I'm curious Slingshot Aerospace did you just see this by chance as you were already tracking the r/b or were you tipped that the event happened and then you tasked to collect obs?

🧵 With the fourth ATLAS 5 CENTAUR (43227 / 2018-022B) breaking up on 06 Sep 2024, it's worth examining the nature of the debris from the other three breakups. First, the fragment count (as of 1 Sep 2023) from both the space-track.org and JSC Vimpel catalog. 1/6

Holy crap, that was possibly the coolest thing I've ever seen. It looked like pure science fiction. What an amazing accomplishment 🚀

A really interesting paper examining how China is taking a different approach to space situational awareness as compared to the US airuniversity.af.edu/CASI/Display/A…

This is wild. Though not sure what's "standard" about a computation that takes 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 years to solve

Still in shock at watching this meeting go down in flames. Trump and Vance would not have dared speak to Putin so rudely like this. Our world is turning upside down by the day.

Now that is some incredible video! Nice touch to land it in such a way that the Earth is in view and the lander catches its own shadow. Amazing work

A bizarrely inaccurate post from USSF, given the attention that this return is getting. Even if it *were* the same Dragon capsule, the astronauts do not return to Earth on a "rocket". An impressive double error in this one! 👏
