Excited and honored to be taking the helm at Roosevelt Institute. Our economy should work for the many, not just the few. The Roosevelt community has been instrumental in the fight for shared prosperity, and I can't wait to jump back in in this new capacity. Let's get to work!

Rohit Chopra spent every day at CFPB making sure we could have a strong financial system that was also safe for consumers. He cracked down on junk fees and false medical debt reports, protected personal financial data, and investigated dangerous de-banking practices.

Looking at seasonally unadjusted core month by month, 2025 starts off hotter than 2024, reversing the progress we've made. Firms are forward looking, and they set most of their price increases early in the year anticipating the future. Which is tariffs, instability, and risk. /1

We’ve got to do better comms around the federal worker purge. We can’t stop at fired workers. It has to be about what that means for folks across the country. No one inspecting your baby’s food, ensuring you aren’t scammed by your lender, or forcing the wealthy pay their taxes.

I wrote about this recently. It’s not that the approach failed (Harris did better than Biden with unionized workers), it’s that unionized workers are only a small fraction of the working class. Need a broader agenda that speaks to the concerns of service sector workers.

A vital lesson from this roundtable of Biden alumni—when government has a tool to make people's lives better, use it, and not a moment too soon. "As we look to rebuild faith in government, we need to talk more about the risk of under-reach" than overreach, Elizabeth Wilkins writes.

I cannot emphasize enough that this is what I mean when I say that tax cuts for the rich end up being paid for by everyone else. 25 years of tax giveaways to the top leads to billionaires like Musk turning around and saying, "we don't have enough money for Social Security."

Independent regulatory agencies are essential to checking the power of concentrated wealth. I know, I worked at FTC and saw first hand the deployment of expertise to shape markets to the public good. Neutering them is a play to let the wealthy rig the economy with impunity.

If you're feeling on this #OpeningDay that you and your fellow fans could do a better job running your favorite team than its billionaire owners—you're probably right. And public ownership of your team isn't a pipe dream, Denton Cohen writes. firesidestacks.com/p/what-if-oakl…

Subscription traps are set to end on May 14. That’s when FTC’s click-to-cancel rule fully kicks in—requiring that subscriptions be as easy to cancel as they are to sign up for. Now, some in Congress are gearing up to gut the rule. America’s Golden Age of… Subscription Traps?

Judge Amy Berman Jackson is putting the CFPB back to work (at least for now). This is a huge win for consumers, and it shows how important it is to fight back against Musk’s attempts to kill off vital parts of our government.

What the New Deal taught us: When authoritarianism knocks on your door, your best defense is a bigger imagination. Democracy is strongest when it's holding capitalism to account & shaping markets that work for everyone, as Elizabeth Wilkins highlighted at today's Patriotic Millionaires event

Big news here at Roosevelt Institute. And with Social Security and our social compact in grave danger, who better than Paul Krugman + Elizabeth Wilkins to remind everyone: Facts matter. And the fact is, taking care of society's most vulnerable is both a moral obligation AND good economics.

Direct File gained major traction to provide an easy, free option to file taxes to people across the country. This a big win for Intuit's profits on TurboTax, but a big loss for the public. apnews.com/article/irs-di…

After 100 days of chaos, we could all use this breath of fresh air. Big economic ideas in this moment aren't just an act of optimism—they're the best shot we've got to stop the wrecking ball and rebuild faith that democracy is better than any alternative.

During the 2021–2023 labor market, a wave of workers used record openings to quit their jobs for better ones. Manufacturing was rivaled only by leisure and hospitality work when it came to the industry that saw the largest increase in their workers quitting. /1

I've got a lot to be grateful for thus mother's day. Most especially my own mom - a complete inspiration for what it looks like to be brilliant, to beat all the odds, and to come out not only without bitterness but with great generosity of spirit for others. 1/
