I really don’t think that this school could spend any less money/time planning “graduate student appreciation week” events.

NIH just announced an update to the NRSA stipend levels, taken as gospel by most institutions. With increase of less than 2% and inflation hitting 8.5% in United States last month, postdocs are effectively taking a 6.5% pay cut. Truly upsetting!

Love that that URochester SMD urmceducation solution to students not being able to afford rent/food is to have them go to a food pantry. But not pay a livable wage… in fact, the PhD stipend only increases 2% for the next cycle, in a year where we experienced 8.5% inflation🤡

For PhD students it's a good idea to gamble on new PIs, on average they are more into it. I often see that the first graduate students that join a lab end up being really successful.
