Anyone who thinks Labour isn’t progressive hasn’t been paying attention. Look at the laws it’s passed so far – radical reforms that the Tories will find difficult to stomach. 5 of the most exciting:

Passenger Railway Services (Public Ownership) Act Brings rail contracts into public ownership when they expire. Effectively the first step towards re-nationalising the railways, but avoids ending contracts early (which would mean paying compensation to operators).

Non-Domestic Rating (Multipliers and Private Schools) Act Cuts business rates for high street shops, funded by a tax rise on the top 1% of business properties like Amazon warehouses. Also scraps business rates discounts of up to 80% for private schools with charitable status.

Budget Responsibility Act Requires the government to request an OBR forecast before any Budget or other fiscal announcement. Aims to avoid another Truss-style mini-budget, where Kwarteng didn’t ask for an OBR analysis and sent markets spiralling.

Financial Assistance to Ukraine Act Allows the UK to take part in the G7’s Extraordinary Revenue Acceleration Loans to Ukraine plan. Through the scheme, the UK will lend £2.26bn to Ukraine, to be repaid by profits on seized Russian assets. x.com/sebastiansalek…
