الديمنشيا مش مرحلة من مراحل الشيخوخة الطبيعية ولكنها حالة مرضية تستدعي التدخل العلاجي. تقدر نسبة المصابين بالديمنشيا حوالي 10% من سن 65 فيما فوق ، وتزيد نسبة حدوثها بزيادة السن لتُقدر ب30% عند سن 85 فيما فوق.
