The San Francisco Chronicle Editorial Board is over it. This whole editorial is 🔥, and the literacy portion is nuclear. “Nearly 60% of our 3rd graders didn’t meet state standards” for ELA. “Meanwhile, poverty-stricken red states such as Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama have surged

In another addition of “How LA makes life unnecessarily hard for businesses” - it took a new ice cream shop *1 year, 2 months* to get approval to move into an old Yogurtland and do minor exterior work + replace the sign. All because of a specific plan existing. Unreal.

This is my dream as an author: a glowing day-one review in The Economist: "Mr Norberg adds fresh details and provocative arguments [and] deftly punctures popular misconceptions. Could a history book be more timely? America’s president will not read it, but others should."

A great, comprehensive summary of what we know about why housing has become more expensive. In US: construction productivity *falling* (would be 3x higher if it improved at same rate as manufacturing in past 50 yrs!) plus densification *falling* (stricter zoning rules). 1/2

It's hard to imagine today, but in the early 2000s, Seoul's public transit was in crisis. However, a set of bus and fare policy reforms in 2004 led to dramatic turnaround, leading to the world-class system it has today. Here's how it happened—and what California can learn.🧵 1/x

Here's a great piece by the The New York Times Upshot desk about the many many ways congestion pricing is improving our city. It should be required reading in the offices of Councilwoman Vickie Paladino, Robert Holden and others: nytimes.com/interactive/20…

The City of Los Angeles could largely solve its $1 billion budget shortfall by allowing more homes to be built near its transit stations, according to a new report out today from Streets For All, an LA-based safe streets and land use advocacy organization.

DC Metro has achieved an 82-85% reduction in subway fare evasion through a combination of taller fare gates and enhanced enforcement. Crime on the system has also fallen to its lowest level in seven years. statecraft.pub/p/how-to-save-…

Amazing findings - traffic down not up in the Bronx, Staten Island, and NJ. “Far from being a policy to benefit Manhattan at the expense of the region, [congestion pricing] has resulted in less traffic overall, even in some places that models predicted it could increase.”

Really great single stair policy recommendations from LCI and AHLA. Notably, they ask to allow it up to the high-rise height limit due to LA's fire fighting capabilities & ask that safety equivalency be made to double-duplex buildings and large appts admin.centerforbuilding.org/wp-content/upl…
