1. World Health Organization (WHO) put out a meaty release today on the confirmation of Guinea's first detected #Marburg case. A thread. The first known case, described in the local media as a 46 yo father of five, developed symptoms on July 25. No word yet on the source of his infection.

Canada to require proof of COVID-19 vaccination for anyone who gets on a commercial plane or a cruise ship or an inter-provincial train. Will also apply to the entire public service, Crown Corporations and other federally regulated sectors. cbc.ca/1.6140131

Smart move, Ontario. “Ontario to mandate [#COVID19] vaccines for hospital workers, give booster shots to the vulnerable, and halt further reopening” thestar.com/politics/provi…

We’re entering a phase in the pandemic where nearly all activities will have some level of risk. People need to decide what risk they are comfortable with by considering their household's medical circumstances and the value of the activity to them. bit.ly/3sUE9x8

1/ Impressive data from Ontario demonstrating how #COVID19 vaccines reduce infection & keep people out of hospital/ICU. But there are >750,000 Ontarians aged 50+ who remain unvaccinated. They are at greatest risk for severe illness in the 4th wave. bit.ly/3yLzSNM

2/ Ontario's ICUs were significantly stretched during Wave 3 when ~550 patients were admitted with #COVID19-related illness, so you can see why >750,000 unvaccinated 50+ is concerning. (Remember admitting adults to paediatric ICUs? I do) Important to continue vaccine outreach.

Addendum: The high water mark for COVID-related illness in Ontario ICUs was ~900. Major policies to curb transmission in the province were enacted at the ~550 mark when it was clear that we were going to overwhelm our ICU capacity.

Some personal news: After almost two years of avoiding this whole #COVID19 thing, I finally got it. Almost certainly omicron. I'm double-vaccinated, yet I've had symptoms for nearly a week. 🧵

#COVID is an airborne disease. ~70% of Ontario kids 5-11 are not fully vaccinated 100% of kids < 5 are unvaccinated My elementary aged kids will continue to mask at school to help protect unvaccinated school mates and the vulnerable family members they may be going home to.

NEW: I’m not sure people appreciate quite how bad the Covid situation is in Hong Kong, nor what might be around the corner. First, an astonishing chart. After keeping Covid at bay for two years, Omicron has hit HK and New Zealand, but the outcomes could not be more different.
