Nuffield Trust head of public affairs, Brexit and general duty NHS wonk. Strangely English-sounding Scot. About 12 in that photo, can't be bothered changing it.

Wider commentary (here Daniel Finkelstein) often assumes the #NHS could easily use private care to solve problems, if a brave Govt committed to it. But every government for ~25 years has tried this! The limits are the costs and the trade-off with NHS capacity thetimes.co.uk/article/street…

Very happy to see our first election briefing by Lucina Rolewicz & Billy Palmer backed by Nuffield Foundation. Unapologetically not high level: we are going deep on laying out solidly founded policies the next Govt needs at a difficult time for health & care nuffieldtrust.org.uk/resource/what-…
Less deprived people live longer AND spend fewer years in poor health, and this is good news, says Professor Chris Whitty at #NTSummit . It means it is biologically possible to have longer lives and to expect *less* need for NHS services, if we similarly improved health of the more deprived
Our response Thea Stein Sally Gainsbury on a Budget that offered quite a bit for long term tech... though we can't say quite how much; a day to day #NHS budget that has just slightly gone up and will probably need more; and nothing (0) on social care. nuffieldtrust.org.uk/news-item/nuff…
Instead of worrying that the public will never agree to pay for social care, the UK's rulers need to make the case to them that it could be a service they are proud of, reassured by and happy to fund. Natasha Curry urges some big political thinking nuffieldtrust.org.uk/news-item/shif…

New UCAS data found nursing applicants down by a third since 2021. Timely piece from Universities UK and my colleague Emma Dodsworth, analysing survey responses from young people on the motivations to, and barriers against, pursuing healthcare careers: universitiesuk.ac.uk/latest/insight…
🆕 We worked with Universities UK to analyse survey results from 5,000 people aged 16 to 26.
The survey sheds important light on the motivations to, and barriers against, pursuing healthcare careers. 1/3
