Todays’ larva is a Little Tunny, Euthynnus alleteratus. Tuna larvae are voracious open-ocean predators with huge jaws and sharp canines. It may be the last thing you see when you are the size of a copepod, ~300 micron 😉...

Striped eel catfish (Plotosus lineatus). Don't touch! It has one venomous serrated spine on the dorsal fin and on each of the pectoral fins, which can be locked upright. The stings can be excruciating and long-lasting, in rare cases, may even be fatal. #marinetoxins #venom

On its maximum size limit... We sampled a 37.5 cm Lagocephalus guentheri in the Eastern Mediterranean. The species is invasive in this area and it doesn't have a natural predator here... 😱😱

Another species shared by Ascension and St Helena (despite its name) is the St Helena Sharpnose Pufferfish, Canthigaster sanctaehelenae. It's common on both islands, from shallow to deep reefs, and it's a good looking puffer! #ichthyology

Here is another beautiful fish that you will see in the California Academy of Sciences Twilight Zone exhibit, the Marquesas Butterflyfish (Chaetodon declivis). This species has very close relatives elsewhere in the Pacific, including the Hawaiian Chaetodon tinkeri, which is also in our exhibit.
