Na de inval van Rusland in 1956 in Hongarije vluchtten veel Hongaren naar Nederland. Het Haagse gemeentebestuur besloot tien nieuwbouwflats aan de Leyweg te reserveren voor gevluchte Hongaarse gezinnen. Op 17 december 1956 kregen de gezinnen de sleutels voor hun nieuwe flat.
