During a severe winter storm (around 1605-9) one of Champlain’s ships in command of Simon Imbert took refuge here and thereafter the river bore his name. Following the French Expulsion of 1755 the English settled the land and then call the river Bear – a corruption of Imbert.

#HaveYouSeen the monument located near the lighthouse dedicated in the memory of Captain Sinclair Baker? It honours a sad story - Captain Baker, together with other locals, perished in St. Margaret's Bay on the Ruby L. while towing the ship Grace Hanikson in for repairs.
