There was that hope again, making his heart beat just a little faster. It would be so easy to tell her that he still loved her. He couldn’t do it. “A lot of things are different now. We’re… different people, I think. Sometimes I think… we needed time to grow, maybe.”

It really seemed like maybe she felt the same way he did. Maybe. “I’m glad we’re those people now, though. Maybe… everything happens for a reason, right? We made it here, right here, to this moment of our lives, for a reason.”

That was a loaded question. He forced himself to meet her eyes, to be brave. He couldn’t imagine that what he wanted mattered, but he wouldn’t lie to her. There was only one answer to that question. “I want… whatever you’ll give me, Nancy. That’s always been the truth.”

“Then I’m all yours. I always was.” It was the complete truth- his heart laid bare for her. It was more than he thought he’d be willing to give. It was scary, but it also felt good to finally say it out loud after all this time.

He couldn’t stop smiling. He hadn’t dared to hope for something like this. In fact, he’d gone out of his way to not imagine this very moment. His imagination wouldn’t have done it justice. “Be my girlfriend, Nancy Wheeler?” It was a little dorky, but he had to ask.

“Uh huh…” He crossed his arms, but he wasn’t frowning anymore. Just curious. “Thinking about what?”
