The last few days kept us busy with dredge operations. We've collected a diverse range of samples from #hydrothermal #rocks to #pyroclastics, #lavas, #volcaniclastics🌋 and #carbonates🐚. Processing is around the clock. Looking forward to picking apart their stories. #M191 #SUAVE

Excitement on #M191 flared at the end of week 1 when we intersected a #hydrothermal #vent field 1st noted by Coltelli et al. INGVvulcani. Our #MBES water column data captured #gas escape from an active chimney in real-time. Some chimneys were then sampled, sketched & described.

On #M191 #seafloor #mapping helps determine dredge locations. The MBES provides bathymetric data & the magnetometer identifies ferromagnetic features (intrusions, seamounts). New volcanic features were found (below) & some suspected volcanic edifices turned out not to be igneous.

Yesterday, we discovered the coolest rock of the cruise so far! 🪨 Our igneous petrology teams immediately got working to figure out what processes could have led to its formation. Can you guess what it might be?

Excited to be working with David Zhang (david zhang) et al on this exciting #Icelandic eruption 🌋 #Hrafntinnuhraun has produced some intriguing pyroclastics which I'm sure we will know much more about soon ⚒️🪨 Make sure to follow David, @subglacial, Hugh Tuffen and @hollyeunwin

On #RVMeteor we like to keep things interesting: if not dredging/mapping, you can find us doing #scicomm. Chief scientist Jörg Geldmacher introduced our work to the crew. Also, a blog post reviewing our discoveries from the first week at sea is now live: tinyurl.com/2pk785vc

As the #M191 dredge team processes sampled rocks, shift leaders operate from the bridge alongside #RVMeteor's nautical crew, shown below selecting and directing dredge locations🌋⛴️ #SUAVE

Kalws hrthame in Greece 🇬🇷! Our 2.5 day transit was spent dismantling equipment, presenting preliminary results on #SUAVE to different groups onboard and working on leaving our mark in the #RVMeteor guestbook. Science team has only a few hours left together now! #M191 out!

Thanks to the Open University Geological Society for inviting me to give the Geoff Brown Lecture 🌋 at their annual #symposium this weekend! It was a fantastic few days of #geology and great fun to talk about my research to such an enthusiastic community of #earth #scientists! 🪨 🔨 🌎

Our paper, showing how Icelandic granites are not a good analogue for formation of our first continents, but may be useful for silicic rocks on planets without plate tectonics is out today in Communications Earth & Environment nature.com/articles/s4324… School of GeoSciences @ University of Edinburgh

Ashes in the archive. Lake Chalco holds a 400,000-year record of 450+ explosive eruptions near Mexico City—some leaving >10 cm of ash. What does this mean for volcanic risk today? #Volcanology #Hazards #MexicoCity #GSABulletin #GSAPubs doi.org/10.1130/B38401… [Fig. 8] Alastair Hodgetts
