Excitement on #M191 flared at the end of week 1 when we intersected a #hydrothermal #vent field 1st noted by Coltelli et al. INGVvulcani. Our #MBES water column data captured #gas escape from an active chimney in real-time. Some chimneys were then sampled, sketched & described.

Excited to be working with David Zhang (david zhang) et al on this exciting #Icelandic eruption 🌋 #Hrafntinnuhraun has produced some intriguing pyroclastics which I'm sure we will know much more about soon ⚒️🪨 Make sure to follow David, @subglacial, Hugh Tuffen and @hollyeunwin
Thanks to the Open University Geological Society for inviting me to give the Geoff Brown Lecture 🌋 at their annual #symposium this weekend! It was a fantastic few days of #geology and great fun to talk about my research to such an enthusiastic community of #earth #scientists! 🪨 🔨 🌎

📢🌋SO excited for the next Ashvances in Tephra Seminar (monday march 25, 1600UTC)! Lucky to have Soledad Osores (SMN Argentina) & Federica Pardini (INGVvulcani) 🤩 Two fantastic speakers leading tephra research & operational response. Registration👉 tinyurl.com/atss0324
Our paper, showing how Icelandic granites are not a good analogue for formation of our first continents, but may be useful for silicic rocks on planets without plate tectonics is out today in Communications Earth & Environment nature.com/articles/s4324… School of GeoSciences @ University of Edinburgh
Ashes in the archive. Lake Chalco holds a 400,000-year record of 450+ explosive eruptions near Mexico City—some leaving >10 cm of ash. What does this mean for volcanic risk today? #Volcanology #Hazards #MexicoCity #GSABulletin #GSAPubs doi.org/10.1130/B38401… [Fig. 8] Alastair Hodgetts
