A gentle reminder that the language we use to discuss abortion creates the scope and boundaries of the discussion. Not all women can become pregnant; not every person who can become pregnant is a woman. Now more than ever, we must use language that is inclusive on purpose.

This video reviews the basics of human fertilization, and, two major take-home points are: 1) about 50% of conceptions spontaneously abort before the person knows they pregnant 2) about 15-20% of the pregnancies that are known spontaneously abort youtu.be/uhlShF7Nl98

I have started using “pregnant people” in my papers, grants, social media etc. I’m getting really concerned about the number of people coming back with “it’s pregnant women” - do people not consider women people???? #academicchatter #pregnantpeople #phdchat #pregnancy

So the verdict's out. The mushy fleshed Hauraki Gulf snapper are starving! My research remains the only study of snapper diet nationwide TLDR: It's not just because of commercial fishing like Woolford implies [A detailed thread] thespinoff.co.nz/society/03-04-…

Fritz is still nursing & could continue for another couple of months! Hippo calves nurse about 8-12 months. He is nursing less often & has been very interested in produce for months now & eating it any chance he gets. Fritz really likes grain and currently gets about 1.4 lbs/day!

Grad school is tough: stipends are typically far below living wages, benefits are frequently inadequate to address needs (e.g., childcare), and power dynamics can create breeding grounds for harassment and abuse. These conditions can act as barriers to a career in life sciences.

Barriers disproportionately affect students with excluded identities, and departmental DEI initiatives are insufficient to make institutional change to working conditions. Worker organizing can be a powerful tool to address barriers at the institutional level.

Very proud of this paper and the work my colleagues at UCSC EEB have put into addressing barriers to careers in life sciences.
