Fritz is still nursing & could continue for another couple of months! Hippo calves nurse about 8-12 months. He is nursing less often & has been very interested in produce for months now & eating it any chance he gets. Fritz really likes grain and currently gets about 1.4 lbs/day!

Grad school is tough: stipends are typically far below living wages, benefits are frequently inadequate to address needs (e.g., childcare), and power dynamics can create breeding grounds for harassment and abuse. These conditions can act as barriers to a career in life sciences.

Barriers disproportionately affect students with excluded identities, and departmental DEI initiatives are insufficient to make institutional change to working conditions. Worker organizing can be a powerful tool to address barriers at the institutional level.

Very proud of this paper and the work my colleagues at UCSC EEB have put into addressing barriers to careers in life sciences.
