It's generally underappreciated (cause counterintuitive) how much energy it takes to fly towards the sun. That's why a spacecraft on route to Mercury's orbit generally relies on gravity assists around the inner planets (1x Earth, 2x Venus, 6x Mercury itself) to even get there.

What always strikes me about these 'deep field' images is the fact that this is not only a view into space but also back into different times. This is not a snapshot of a single point in time but rather shows a temporal cross section of several billion years all in one pic.

$780 million and 9 years flight time to study a planet that wasn't even a planet on arrival anymore. Totally worth it 😍
