Q&A- many animals come to us with no history. Some are from livestock auctions. During the initial quarantine phase we try to get to know them. I’ve never had a hard time naming them. I’m pretty sure they tell us. If you believe in that sort of thing. Animals that come to us with

Cattle is the broadest descriptor. You can break it down Young female = heifer Mature female = cow Uncastrated male = bull Castrated male= steer Most people just refer to them as cows and that is fine. No need to address exact terms unless you are a farmer 😉 You can further

The More You Know- Want to know a fast cheat to tell male from female at a distance when looking at cattle. Look at belly. Males will have prominent ridge that is usually along the middle of the underbelly toward the hind legs. There is also usually a tuft of longer hair hanging

Musings from the Barn🐮 It doesn't seem that long ago that smol Crouton was called Marty and tippy tapped around the aisle under ever vigilant eyes of his goat. From the Archives™️ with a small calf learning how to live in a horse barn while stealing hearts across the internet💚

First cut hay is coarser. Around here it is usually cut in may/ June. The hay then grows until farmers cut again depending on weather and maturity. We get second cut in August here in NY. A third cut is possible some years. Second cut is spectacular from our local farmers. Soft

Eventful morning. Poppy lay down and couldn’t get himself up. After his fall last Sunday he has been very sore. The gabapentin he is on made him wobbly. He had iv fluids and steroids. We used the tractor to lift him. He’s bright and content. We’ve adjusted meds and will continue

Poppy had dinner and is still upright. All good signs ❤️ went to walk in the house and wiggles slipped going up the wet steps. She is now on three legs and I’m hoping to god she didn’t tear her CCL. Most of you remember when she tore her CCL in the other leg. Calgon take me away

Musings from the Barn🐐🐑 No one really knows why the wind feels fresher, the sun brighter, and the grass tastier when enjoyed on an escape. Now, no one says Roo had a hoof in teaching the goats how to work locks but suspiciously timed Ruminant Herd Shenanigans™️ seem connected.

Poppy had a quiet day. After yesterday he is actually doing better than I expected. Vet check early this week. Wiggles is still very lame. I’ll try to get her in with vet tomorrow
