n 1912 the US congress created the Territory of Alaska and the Alaska Territorial Legislature. The first act of the all-male legislature was to grant Alaskan women the right to vote. Excluded from the legislation, however, were Alaskan Natives.

Tues. Sept. 20th is National Voter Registration Day. Representatives from the LWV of Wm. Co. will be at the Franklin Library (10:00-2:00) and the Brentwood Library (9:30-2:00) to help register voters.

Nov. is Native American Heritage Month: Native Americans were not considered citizens until the 1924 Indian Citizenship Act. Even with this Act Native Americans had to fight state by state for the right to vote which was finally achieved in 1962.
