Things I wish someone had told me 28 years ago, but I probably wouldn't have listened anyway:

The real world is full of unnecessary dialouge. If you're going for realism, be sure to use lots of dialouge but only when your POV character would notice it (ie: someone talking to fill the silence because that's what people do).

Why i have trouble marketing my books Tribes of Chalent (3 books so far) and Commonwealth Novel (2 books so far): I have a day job. I need to sell more books to quit my day job, but I need to quit my day job to have time to sell more books.

Don't open until you've finished all you already have, then only open long enough to accept submissions you can get through in a month. Then do the same next month. Why is this such a hard concept?

It's okay to let your reader imagine what your main character looks like. You don't HAVE to describe them if you don't want to, and their appearances don't have any bearing on the story.

It's okay if your magic works because...magic. It doesn't have to have a system. And while we're on the subject, the "science" in sci-fi doesn't have to be reasonable.
