Why did I get an email from VPL asking for donations, the day after City Council voted to give the VPD 4.5 million dollars and VCH 1.5 mil. A public good like the library shouldn't seemingly have to resort to charity when the City of Vancouver clearly has the funds

New Vancouver mayor musing about how libraries can subsidize cops, who are demanding a 11% budget increase, and who have already been promised 100 new hires.

A common problem in software is that people want to increment (add on) without iterating (revising the design to include the new features). The waterfall idea of driving to an end point in a single pass tends to make software internally designless.

And more strikingly, SPC practitioners believe ability to understand variation is the marker of data literacy. If you don’t grok variation; if you ask your subordinates to come up with reasons for every instance of ‘number go down’ — you are basically data illiterate.

The tofu in your hot pot, or that soy milk in your latte — it has a story. 🥘☕️ Christopher Cheung ✍️ (Find me on Bluesky!) visited Vancouver’s Sunrise Soya Foods tofu factory and spoke with Leslie Joe, 88, whose business grew as his family did. thetyee.ca/News/2023/04/2…

All it takes for a company to lose you for life is to fool you once. I signed up to a monthly Adobe subscription, only to realized it was a *yearly* one paid monthly (?!) when I tried to cancel, and Adobe did not let me. That was it: me done with Adobe. I cannot recommend them.

But the truth is, the good things in life don't scale vertically. Accept it and enjoy horizontal scaling - write a shitton of useful small-to-medium Python programs, and make your heavy-lifting monoliths scriptable in Python

Pet peeve: If the data is a string, let me enter it as a string. You can give some stupid structured interface that takes 10x as long to use for marginal benefit too if you want, but let me type in the damn string.

I have a friend who makes like high six figures as an engineer. I once asked him his secret and he was like, “honestly man, I just read one engineering textbook every year, which is one more book than everyone else I know reads.”

Every science and tech person who is currently on the bandwagon calling for the vaccine doctor to go on Joe Rogan to debate RFK should be ashamed of themselves. If you care about the truth or science, that is the WORST possible thing you could be advocating for. (thread)

many people here shooting the messenger. your odds of 12 week bootcamping your way into a 6-figure job are incredibly slim. these bootcamps prey on people who want to "one weird trick" fast-track their way into a lucrative job and that's just not typically happening.

I can probably count on one hand the number of times I've actually needed polymorphism and/or overloading to solve a problem. Seems unnecessary.

My god, they *hate* @linakhanFTC. This once-in-a-generation brilliant legal scholar and fighter for the public interest, slayer of #Reaganomics, has attracted more vitriol, mockery, and dismissal than any predecessors in living memory. She must be doing something right, huh? 1/
