A thing I often think is missing from the uni discourse is that young people who aren't from a pretty wealthy (/academic/high cultural capital) background actually have no idea what jobs there are except the quite obvious ones

If we really wanted safe communities we would invest in the things that research has consistently shown makes us safer. Housing. Food security. Mental health services. But we only want safer *white* communities. And that means policing.

also, this is why it’s important to believe survivors—because trauma may literally make you forget things. IT IS A PART OF HOW OUR BODIES PROTECT US. so when you judge survivors for not having “facts straight”, you’re missing an essential part of the way our brains function.

One year ago today, a white nationalist killed 23 people in a Walmart in El Paso, Texas with an AK-47. What has America done since to stop the next one?

One year ago, El Paso experienced a tragedy at the hands of a white supremacist. Today, we #RememberElPaso – and we continue to demand accountability. Lawmakers can no longer look away as communities of color and religious minorities are murdered with impunity. #LoveForElPaso

As an El Pasoan, getting through this article was tough. It brought back a lot of feelings from that day. I encourage my non-El Paso and social work friends to read. Our pain is still here. Pay attention #ElPasoStrong #ElPasoFirme

and I am still being careful to protect people and organization's identities. but I learned three important things: 1. Boards, DO BETTER! 2. Trust my instincts around work. If it feels off, it is. 3. YOU ARE NOT THE WORST THING A BAD BOSS OR JOB HAS EVER SAID ABOUT YOU.

we know who’ll be disproportionately targeted for dress code violations, even in their own homes: girls and non-binary youth of color, particularly Black youth, who are already harassed and over-policed for their clothes in school. this is an unnecessary power play.

My uncle was the first one to show love for my natural hair. When everyone else was telling me to “do something” with it he told me how he loved it. And now here I am, 3 years natural! While I miss you so much, I’ll always hold you deep in my heart. Happy birthday to me! 🎂🎉

university leaders wouldn’t have to worry about looking like boo boo the fool when the inevitable happens if they would just be forthcoming about their desire/need for capital instead of pretending to care about whether people are affected by the virus in any way, shape or form.

Today my middle school kids read Eve L. Ewing’s “I saw Emmett Till this week at the grocery store” as a model text. Afterwards, I asked them to write a poem in which they met someone from history in the present in a mundane place. Excerpt from one kid’s poem:

I mean considering that a majority of the county was not actually shutdown during this time, are we surprised? I think it’s highly inappropriate to report it as such.

Whereas “minority” implies an innocent numerical designation, “minoritized” emphasizes the power relations & processes through which particular populations, ideas, & practices come to be positioned as dominant or subordinate regardless of whether they predominate numerically
