In a sector that's often more politics and fads than keeping the main thing as the main thing, Emily Anne Gullickson is unflinchingly kids-first, I've seen that in action and it's great to have her as State Sup't of Public Instruction in VA. Anna Bryson here: richmond.com/news/state-reg…

So who is launching the dumb-your-phone-to-improve-your-life 2-week challenge? Test in the real work at scale immediately?!

Removing distractions like phones from the school day means students can focus more on two important things: 1) learning & 2) being kids. Excited for Georgia students, families, and educators - kudos to Michael O'Sullivan and GeorgiaCAN for helping lead the charge!

Love these ideas for expanding public school choice. More than 7M kids already use charter or magnet schools; hundreds of thousands leverage open enrollment. And don't sleep on the appetite and opportunity for microschools in public & private sector! the74million.org/article/a-k-12…

There's many reasons I'm proud to have joined 50CAN. That list includes last year's 25 policy wins, a groundbreaking survey of 20K parents, dozens of elections to elect both D and R candidates who champion kids, & more incredible accomplishments shared here!

Solid new evidence that AP Calculus doesn't have to be the end-all, be-all of advanced math. But also this line: "But [students] should make those choices based on their interests and capabilities, not because of meager opportunities and weak mathematics instruction."

Annual Strategic Data Project #SDPconvening kicking off with a bang. Emphasis on parents continuing to demand information about their kids’ progress, opportunities for new data and information, and how much hasn’t changed if you’re a district supe. Derrell Bradford Chris Minnich Andrew Rotherham

I'm so excited to dig into this study - open enrollment policies are both growing and under-discussed. 1.6 million kids used open enrollment last year, including almost 700K low-income kids.

Looking forward to this event and learning from the researchers coming to present their work! Turns out, as Nat Malkus likes to remind us, we still need kids to attend school if we want any other policies or programs to work.

Nobody should be surprised that the day is here when kids in classrooms lose out to the need to fund teacher pensions. We've known for years this was coming. But everyone should be alarmed.

Fascinating piece on ability-level grouping for reading instruction. Particularly struck by this: "We don’t move on if a group isn’t showing mastery. We pause. We support. And sometimes, we shift students into a group that’s a better fit." the74million.org/article/we-sta…
