Foreshore butterflies. Pottery sherd versus the real thing. This Red Admiral landed near me when I was out mudlarking on the Thames, the photo is from two years ago & I’ve seen none of these in my garden this year. Numbers are in major decline everywhere bbc.com/news/articles/…

Liz Anderson πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦πŸŒ»πŸ“šπŸ–‹πŸΊπŸ“·πŸΈ Caught these two in the last couple of months in a secluded part of Victoria Tower Gardens, more or less left to its own devices. Photographed a field mouse these too. You're right, gardens are often over sanitised.

Important findings here from Historic England . England's heritage sector is estimated to have contributed Β£44.9 billion in Gross Value Added (GVA) to the UK economy in 2022 and employed over 523,000 people. Many of them work at Historic Houses places!

Seeing red today. Thames Foreshore finds - marbles, beads, raw agates, garnets, pottery, plastic toy & a decorative pointy piece of red marble that fell of Vauxhall Bridge once as I walked underneath at low tide. Mudlarking can be dangerous (thank the Lord I was wearing a hat.)

Following this with interest. Many enjoy open water swimming but it comes at a time when water quality in the Thames is very poor. The new super sewer will end at Hammersmith & the recent plans to allow Mogden to release treated sewage into the river in SW London is concerning.

A discovery in Rome was the lovely medieval cloister of San Giovanni in Laterano, such a change from the ponderous basilica. Full of intricate cosmatesque work, giving it a Byzantine feel to my mind.

A HUGE thank you to the 12,000 of you who have already signed our open letter πŸ’šπŸ¦‹ We are still fighting for butterflies and moths to get the protections needed by the Government to stop declines. We won’t stop until a Nature Emergency has been declared. #ButterflyEmergency

Nail in the coffin for me was Lebedev buying the ES (Baron Of Hampton, Richmond upon Thames and Siberia, my big fat backside) & appointing George Osborne as editor. It didn’t need to end like this and now London is the only major capital city in Europe without its own newspaper.
