I think about this Tom Waits story all the time.

the point of self driving cars isn’t safety. by eliminating human ride-hail drivers, corporations can flood cities with their cars. they’ll increase VMT just like uber/lyft have, and compete w transit, having negative impacts on the environment and equitable transportation.
