It is with deep sadness that we convey the sad news, that our great friend & cycling colleague of many decades, Ted Crowley of Midleton, has left us to continue his cycling P.A. duties in heaven. Ted first came to Listowel to the Gene Moriarty memorial cycle race

in 1985. Accompanied by his dear wife Margo, daughter Emer and his sons Colin, Aidan and Ronan. Ted immediately assumed platform and public address duties. Continuing for the next 40+ years at cycling events in Listowel and beyond.

He was a renowned and beloved figure at events all over the country. Reprising his P.A. role at Rás Mumhan, an Rás Tailteann, and many others besides. His son Aidan, well known within Irish cycling circles as the Dude, is the only rider to win the U12 & Senior races in Listowel

Colin won in emphatic fashion the under 16 event. Ted nearly swallowed the microphone that day. Almost.... almost lost for words, when Colin crossed the finish line, hand aloft grabbing victory in highly dramatic fashion at the very last moment.

My friendship with Ted endured and grew since that time. Both at club level and even deeper on a personal level. In particular, Ted and I developed a deep bond beyond cycling, remaining in almost weekly contact to discuss all matters of sport, world and local affairs.

Besides cycling, and the odd day of horse racing in between. We attended Gaelic football matches together, Kerry v Cork of course. Each of us sporting our special county colour socks, always with a hint of a cycling theme.

Ted was a great and proud Irishman. A legend around Ireland, guaranteeing safe passage for racing cyclists for so many years, ahead of an Rás Tailteann in particular.  He announced the arrival of Rásanna throughout Ireland, accompanied by his equally legendary musical score.

He had a special knack for bringing events to life. Amplifying the excitment, drawing in and engaging crowds, while at the same time recognising and acknowledging individual event supporters and friends all along the way.

He was the voice, the approaching sound, the deliverer of rhythm for those who waited at the roadside for the race to arrive. Tedser, as riders fondly called him, was ahead of his time, an original social medium. He put names to faces

Drenched in their efforts and the accompanying cacophony of sound. Ted in his own inimitable way would instantly orientate spectators and competitors alike. Skillfully describing the focus, the state of play, and the cyclists individual status in their pursuit of glory.

Often he interspersed his commentary with his own brand of entertainment, including topical items of the day. His myriad contributions to the sport of cycling, his charitable work, family and life went far beyond public address of course and will never be forgotten.

Finally, I always told him he was my favourite Corkman & he always will be. 🟥⬜ 🇨🇮 Corcaigh Abu!  For a Kerryman that was hard to get out Ted. That one is especially, and only for you. God Rest You Ted
