(8:20AM) ❄️🚨 #NYC — this heavy #snow band is for you! If you thought the worst is behind us, *NOW* is the worst with 1-3” per hour snowfall rates and 50+ mph gusts. This is on top of 15-18” of snow so far, according to NWS reports as of 7AM.

Atmospherically it’s hard to achieve conditions more extreme than this in a winter storm. 70-80mph wind gusts coupled with extreme snowfall rates between 2-4” per hour. Visibility near true zero in exposed areas. A generational blizzard for some.

This is what explosive extratropical intensification looks like. The central core pressure has dropped to ~970 mbar this morning, similar to that of a Category 2 Hurricane. An all-out blizzard is now raging in New England as this titanic, winterstorm cyclone continues to swirl.

Fascinating evolution of two quasi-stationary snow bands today: - fires of moisture targeted at SE MA & Rhode Island producing heavy snow since 2-3am - *still* ongoing 16 hours later - near-stationary band over eastern NJ this morning produced a narrow swath of 24-28 inches

Using all public storm reports from the NWS so far, I contoured a preliminary estimated snow accumulation map for today's blizzard (through 6-8pm EST tonight). Truly a historic storm - both in terms of impacts, and the forecast challenges leading up to it.
