Just finished reading this brilliant book. Written for #ActuallyAutistic ppl, by an autistic author. It has helped so much in understanding how we acquire masks and how to work to free ourselves from them. It has real tangible answers and a real base for us to take on ableism.

Scientists Rule! Writing is easier for many of us than verbal speech because we can better control the pace and make sure we are using the right words for what we mean.

Educational bit: If an #ActuallyAutistic person shares information w you, it’s NOT because we feel negatively toward you or “think we know everything” or are judging you. We’re doing it because we like you. Most of us LOVE information. We’re just sharing our favorite thing.

The same autistic traits that are perceived as advanced, mature and aspirational in children are often seen as underdeveloped, immature and shameful in adults - even when those traits have blossomed/evolved. Society’s perception of age and behaviour is not logical or consistent.

Callum Stephen (He/Him) as an educator, we teach autistic children how to behave in underfunded, understaffed schools. we teach them to rely on structure and schedule and not much else. then when they leave k-12, we wonder why they struggle when the only 2 things we’ve taught them to rely on are gone 😪

These seclusion rooms, also known as "quiet rooms" are common in specialist schools for #Autistic students. We know they're trauma-inducing. Neurodivergent-Affirming professionals, how do you respond when staff ask: "But what are we supposed to do if a child is kicking off?!"

A cool thing happened yesterday when my child went to the doctors. He said to them 'You and I have something in common, I am on the spectrum too' Doctors are now disclosing to their patients! Things are starting to change. 😃
