Q3: Oh, I could write an article on this one! (I actually did ๐Ÿ˜œ) BUT in short: I have students help design assessments, design/implement rubrics, and SOMETIMES even have them help me figure out tasks that could allow them to show what they learned.

Q4: I think the obvious one is whether they have the maturity AND content knowledge to really make valid choices. My response with this is...start small and make the choices easier and low stakes. The students will pleasantly surprise you in what they eventually do choose.

Q5: So for me, I feel fairly comfortable in doing this for the MOST part. HOWEVER, I would like students to help me design a unit in itself. Where they decide as a class what they want to learn over a period (big idea) and I help them break it down.

Nothing warms my heart more than seeing my students excited about getting to color. Side note: they are high-school students. A reminder to us all that even adolescents need to play.๐Ÿ˜ƒ

A great game to put our students' energy to good use during this time, while still working on language acquisition! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Another article for edutopia about a SIMPLE late work policy that boosted morale and established boundaries for me and my students. To paraphrase one of my students "in this class...you see us as people...and we see you too". โ˜บ๏ธ edutopia.org/article/designโ€ฆ

It has been exciting to engage with fellow educators on this topic and share best practices on edutopia. A sense of balanced accountability can help the mental health of everyone! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Collaborating with students to create class policies is not always easy, but is worth it. ๐Ÿ™‚ This article was a joy to write for edutopia . Thank you to Teacher2Teacher for sharing it๐Ÿ™‚
