Sometimes you just come across a really neat article and have to share. 'Are Special Education Data Ever “Race Neutral”? Reporting Educational Environments Data by Race and Ethnicity' by Tye Ripma! journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.11…

My academic sister Cherish_Sarmiento Ph.D never ceases to amaze me. Not only did she successfully propose her dissertation today, she made it public so that all of us following behind her could see how it works. This is #firstgen students breaking down barriers 👏🏻

Since she is too modest to boast, I’ll do it for her. Cherish_Sarmiento Ph.D’s study is going to be phenomenal. Some of the comments from committee: “My excitement level is above high,” “Don’t underestimate how important this study is,” and “I would hate for this study to stop here” 🤩

The #1 advice I would give to incoming #gradstudents is to find an advisor who will continuously lift you up. This journey is hard enough as it is - surround yourself with people (including labmates & coauthors) who will walk alongside you.

These numbers come with a caution: how were students tested? how appropriate were those tests used for the EL students to identify the disability? and how well were the personnel who tested these students trained in working with students who are learning English as L2? 🕵🏽‍♀️

I’m not expecting this to change before I hit the job market in a few years - but if hired, I will try to use my limited power/privilege to start to change this
