Trump—a convicted fraudster, rapist, and insurrectionist—isn’t an outlier. The fact that he can win power again is a symptom of systemic weakness. In any functioning democracy, such a figure would be politically extinct. In the U.S., he was the GOPs first choice. 2/10

How did we get here? Its complicated but two core flaws make American democracy structurally unstable: 1ļøāƒ£ Money in politics—Citizens United allows billionaires to buy elections. 2ļøāƒ£ Electoral system design—A few swing states decide everything, making it easy to manipulate outcomes

Unlike in Europe (at least my country), where politicians resign over minor infractions, the U.S. system enables criminals to return to power. When legal accountability means nothing, when money outweighs votes, when courts are stacked—how democratic is the U.S., really? 4/11

Europe must wake up. The old assumption—that the U.S. will always be there as a security guarantor—is dead. A country that can be hijacked by extremists every four years is no foundation for defense and security. 7/11

The German fiscal package is massive (10-20% GDP). - 500 billion 10Y fund for public investment - All defence spending above 1% of GDP not counted for debt brake. - Federal states can borrow 0.35% p.y. for investment. Germany is back - economically +militarily. 1/x

An important lesson for Germany from Bidenomics is that if you are going to do big fiscal stimulus, you need to very aggressively break down regulatory barriers to supply to get ahead of the inflation risk.

Europe seems to be preparing to run a war economy. It will have a choice of going down the path of WWI when free market principles were applied to wartime challenges, or WWII when planning delivered a broad-based economic success in the US. See: How China Escaped Shock Therapy.

Trump's "big" trade deal is with the UK: - It's a framework not a deal - They're our 11th largest trading partner - They're only 3% of US trade (97% to go) - They *already* charge average tariffs of only 1% (limited upside) It's a photo op, with little macroeconomic significance

Maybe I'm being unfair, but a trade deal in which the US raises tariffs on the UK and the UK lowers tariffs... ... feels a bit... one-sided

There's no way back from a suspension of Habeas Corpus. It's a one-man dictatorship then. And any Republican in office or out who would still support Trump after this is, simply, a traitor to America cnn.com/2025/05/09/pol…
