'There is a unique and modern dissonance lying under any more Romantic themes, but the pastoral uncertainties of an England fading into the distance are an essential presence.' My review of Lennox Berkeley's piano music from Douglas Stevens, for ClassicalMusic Daily. classicalmusicdaily.com/2020/11/berkel…

#OnThisDay in 1953 Pears sang the title role in a concert performance, to piano accompaniment, of Lennox Berkeley's new opera Nelson at the Wigmore Hall in London. The full opera was premiered in Sep 1954 with Robert Thomas in the lead role.

I'm rereading a really fine book about Lennox Berkeley that I wrote about last year in the The Wall Street Journal. What a fine composer—and what a complex, interesting man! wsj.com/articles/an-un…

Jude de Vos Wasim Hussain In my youth whilst psychiatric nursing I cared for Sir Lennox Berkeley . He was a composer with Benjamin Britain. His poor brain ravaged by dementia yet he would sit at a piano and move us to tears at his ability to play so beautifully. Memories I have never forgotten.
