It’s Podofact Friday! Fact 1: The apical membrane of a podocyte is negatively charged due to the presence of proteins such as podocalyxin. This charge is thought to repulse similarly charged molecules (such as albumin) to aid the filtration barrier

Fact 2: Endocytosis is an important function of podocytes and is thought to regulate multiple aspects of podocyte health, including the actin cytoskeleton, the slit diaphragm, and even albumin processing.

Fact 3: Adhesion to the GBM and maintenance of the actin cytoskeleton are important for podocyte health and function. This is highlighted by the fact that of the ~40 genes that cause FSGS/nephrotic disease, all can be attributed to regulating podocyte adhesion or actin dynamics
