Hello! I’m Hélène Baum Hélène Baum and I’ll be taking over the Tate Publishing account for today. I’m excited to share with you the process of illustrating “Meet the Artist: Frank Bowling” written by #ZoeWhitley Feel free to ask any questions along the way & I hope you enjoy it!

This is my workspace. It’s in a corner of my flat in #Berlin. I mostly paint with #watercolour, sometimes #ink. It’s a tidy mess which is what seems to inspire me most, with it’s plants, collected postcards & objects, paintings and lots of books! #workspace #takeover #interiors

When I discovered #FrankBowling ‘s work, I was captivated by his way of using paint & colour, particularly in his poured paintings. So before starting to illustrate the pages, I wanted to see how I could get closer to his work, using my watercolour technique. #experiments

Every illustration starts with a ‘rough’ - a preparatory line drawing or sketch. This then goes onto a lightbox, the watercolour paper is placed on top and finally I can paint the image, guided by the sketch ✍️✍️

Here is one of the “Meet the Artist: Frank Bowling” spreads with some of the original paintings. I actually followed the exercise from the book, to integrate the results back into the page. #FrankBowling
