Walmart discussed how they will need to raise prices due to tariffs. Meat was not stated as one of those items but would not surprise me to see some increases.

Cof/days on feed doesn’t add up for what is going on in the cash market. Cutting kills is a push market, not a pull. Perhaps we are just a lot more short of cattle than what many realize!! 🧐

It used to be we seen a 8-12% break from spring high to summer low. If that’s the case, the board would be close to fair value here and it might just be basis that flips. The south will definitely go premium to north with borders closed by fall. Kind of wild!!

What if cash prices don’t drop anytime soon….or even go higher?? Not a prediction but markets cause the most pain on the masses.

Food for thought: A 10 herd cow herd might make more than a 10,000 head feedlot the next few years!! {}roject $tock Rayder might make more than all of them trading as that’s what all the big boys will be doing to try to make these high dollar feeders work!!

One impact of COVID, along with the rise of social media apps, is that people learned how to cook restaurant-quality meals at home instead of dining out—saving $. Overall, that’s helped support stronger wholesale prices without hitting the consumer’s pocketbook. Glynn Tonsor

Can you blame producers for not following the board when it’s so discounted to cash very frequently and often at very high levels?!?!

Basis was extremely wide in 2014 too as well as 2012 with grains. Tight supplies and wide basis happens. I remember well a lot of cattle being cash contracted for $5-8 over for board for fall del. in 2015. This killed strong cash contracts as packers never did it again since.

Traders worried about the board but yet in salebarns they are ignoring it, but can you blame them when $20 positive basis and I just don’t think the cattle are here.

For those that think a plant is closing soon, you need to look at p/l chart 📈 over last five years. Still way ahead. Feedlots are not tearing out yards already after one bad year. Granted it’s a little different but same concept nonetheless. Not easy decisions.
