It's been a hectic few days filled with heartache - to experience such joy last night was unreal.

Havelock North was largely spared from the cyclone - but a small pocket wasn't so lucky. Joll Road backs on to the Mangarau Stream, and was ravaged. A stark contrast to the manicured lawns and neatly trimmed hedges on neighbouring streets.

Waipawa's Bibby Street could be mistaken for a state highway, such was the amount of traffic. Trucks, trailers and diggers were there to clear silt and move rubbish and debris. Cars delivered kai to volunteers mucking in. People showed up every few minutes. "How can I help?"

Today Lauren Crimp and I moved to Napier to take on a year of cyclone recovery reporting. Our entry point, the Napier-Taupō road, took us through Esk Valley. We’re up for a year. There are hundreds more stories to tell.
