As a Dubliner abroad, watching what is happening to my city is heartbreaking. The actions of those in the city do not represent the values of #Dublin or Ireland. It is shameful. My thoughts are with the injured in the attack today and emergency services trying to do their jobs💚

On #InternationalDisabilityDay it is important to remember that the barriers to access employment, education, healthcare etc… are not created by disabled people and every part of society needs to do better to be #inclusive and support positive change

The decision not to appoint a Minister for Disabled People sadly sends the message that disabled people are not a priority for Government

#Ableism remains pervasive and often seen as acceptable in many parts of society. I have faced ableism throughout my life including in my career as an OT and to this day has had a huge impact on my life. Enough is enough.

There is much work to do to improve access to and maintaining inclusive work environments for disabled people. Many disabled people face discrimination and ill informed employers. This can cause much harm and distress to the employee. #righttowork #disability #equity

If a workplace has a culture problem nothing else will be right. What I have learned in the last few years despite all the stress it has caused me is a toxic workplace cultures are harmful and it’s now the no 1 thing on my list to watch out for.

Signs of a leadership culture problem: - status & grade are everything - high staff turnover, especially staff who ask questions 🙋‍♀️ - bright people go quiet 🤐 - good ideas are claimed by seniors - rule followers are the ones who stay - leaders can’t see there’s a problem 🤷‍♂️

Having done this job for a number of years, there are places in the NHS I would actively avoid. Unsafe, bullying cultures, intolerable workloads all come to my inbox from these places on a daily basis. Here are some useful red flags if you are looking to move.

Another important leadership lesson I’m learning on my inclusive journey is when colleagues are brave enough to tell you that you’re getting things wrong then listen. And when those colleagues are Black, Brown, LGBT+, Disabled then I listen even harder. #NHSLeadership

Ableism can take many forms. It could be assumptions, stereotypes, negative attitudes, physical barriers, or even larger scale oppression. It can be very deeply ingrained. Dismantling ableism is complex. But defining it can make it easier to identify and combat it.

#Ableism is still rife within workplaces and is often ignored as it is rooted in workplace structures and cultures. It is pervasive and I have both experienced and witnessed it. It needs to be addressed at individual, management and organisational level.
