On this day in 1865, and over 2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, soldiers arrived in Galveston, TX with news that the war was over and the enslaved were free. Now known as #Juneteenth or #FreedomDay, this day commemorates the ending of slavery in the U.S.
