Ten months ago, we launched the Vesuvius Challenge to solve the ancient problem of the Herculaneum Papyri, a library of scrolls that were flash-fried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Today we are overjoyed to announce that our crazy project has succeeded. After 2000

I just learned that W. R. Johnson, author of the seminal book on Vergil’s Aeneid, _Darkness Visible_, died yesterday. That book profoundly affected me as an undergrad. It took me a while to realize it was the same Ralph Johnson, my next door neighbor growing up in Ithaca. RIP.

I assigned the Ben Johnson video on Catullus 85 for homework, and one student told me out of all the homework assignments I’ve ever given, this one — he didn’t even have the words, it was too mind-blowing. He talked about Cat85 with his dad for an hour. youtu.be/r7--agTtb5M?si…

Yes. I learned Fortran and studied Latin in 1973-4. One of them is now effectively a dead language, the other provides constant inspiration!

I am so thrilled about the publication of my first book: "Et Cetera: An Illustrated Guide to Latin Phrases"! This project has been a labor of love. It combines my passion for Ancient Roman literature with beautiful illustrations by Marta Bertello. maialeechin.com/book/et-cetera/

43 BC: Marcus Tullius Cicero est omnis divisus in partes tres, quarum una caput est, alia truncus, tertia manus… {Rather macabre. Sorry).

The Maine DOE visited my school yesterday for the final round of the Maine Teacher of the Year. I couldn't have asked for a better day. mainedoenews.net/2025/09/26/a-d…
