To abandon writing instruction is to abandon thought itself. We’ve traded the hard work of forming arguments for the easy act of journaling feelings. The result is kids who can emote endlessly but reason hardly at all.

Nate Joseph The distinction between sound-to-print and print-to-sound is immaterial as long as the phonics programme (a) is teaching phonemes in relation to letters (i.e. not oral only), and (b) includes plenty of spelling as well as decoding.

As many states and their schools go phone free, here is encouraging news: a major study finds evidence of academic benefit from banning phones in class. (Going phone-free all day would deliver many additional social and emotional benefits) economist.com/united-states/…

New from me: Books are going missing from school curriculum, and the issue is worse than you imagine. The culprits might surprise you, too. Link follows.

I’m sorry but balloon arches and certificates w the school logo and trips for admin to conferences about software aren’t going to do sh*t for attendance. Fix Tier 1 and teacher training and ban phones and laser focus on literacy.

They do not help keep kids safer at all and they probably make school shootings more likely by making them more available as an idea to extremely troubled kids.

‘One would imagine Wonders is an unpopular, poorly-regarded curriculum. Not so much. The Center for Education Market Dynamics suggests it has nearly 20% of the elem. market, and it’s in the top 3 programs in CA, FL, & TX. It also earns top reviews and most states have put it on their curriculum lists.’ 🧵

This is such a great question...we spend a lot of time lamenting the loss/lack of books in school (as we should), but we don't talk about the hardest part: rebuilding student stamina so they can read full-length novels. What do folks think? What resources do you recommend?

It’s International Literacy Day! Can we please get CEO-Hat-Snatch levels of outrage over the fact that books have been snatched from classrooms and replaced with passages? And reviewers and states and districts are buying it? Please RT if you agree that this is the more

Here is one of the texts from the Wonders Grade 3 curriculum. Does this look like a text that is worthy of third graders’ time?
