Great explanation to why it takes time to get the final election results, as well as a good reminder that we (rightly) make voting as easy as it can be, because democracy is about the people. And there are appropriate checka to ensure everything has been done properly.

Hurricane #Otis has smashed Acapulco, a city of 1 million with less than 12 hrs warning. The fancy high-rises and neighbourhoods where ordinary people live are wrecked. #NoOneIsSafe #NowhereIsSafe

Tonight, our hearts are in Bethlehem, where the Prince of Peace is once more rejected by the futile logic of war, by the clash of arms that even today prevents him from finding room in the world. #Christmas

Brilliant piece from John Campbell this morning. Says everything that needs to be said and more. Thank you. John Campbell: Are we on the cusp of something new or something old? 1news.co.nz/2023/12/30/joh…

Someone asked me, "if many people are gradually developing long COVID, wouldn't we see it in the economic data?" Yes, we would. And in fact we are. A few recent examples:

In 2024, Calgary, the city where Seymour was claiming in 2010 that public transport would never work, has a light rail network with the 2nd-highest ridership in North America (it runs on wind-generated electricity) and the most extensive walk-and-cycle network on the continent.

Our results imply a SCC of $1,056 per ton of carbon dioxide vs. $151/tCO2 when we estimate the model on local temperature shocks. A business-as-usual warming scenario leads to a present value welfare loss of 31%. Both are multiple orders of magnitude above previous estimates.

Very depressing that Fonterra plans to sell off well-known consumer brands. If they go into foreign ownership, that has adverse implications for #NZ’s balance of payments. Company’s vision seems limited to being an efficient commodity producer. newshub.co.nz/home/money/202…
