Democracy dies in darkness, indeed. Make no mistake: Rigorous sports journalism is just as important to maintaining our democracy as any other type of coverage. First they come for our cultural institutions. Solidarity with my WaPo friends and colleagues.

Sad to say I was also laid off by The Post today. Lucky to have spent 10 years covering HS sports for my hometown paper, writing about hundreds of my neighbors. Thanks to anybody who made time to talk, sent in stats or complained about All-Met selections. Truly, I loved it all.

The Post covered local high schools for more than 100 years, and I was honored to be a small part of that history. Even in our absence, I hope these local athletes continue to get the ink they deserve. #allmets
