We've talked a lot about the #AMOC in the past few months, but do you need more help understanding it? 💭 We've created this handy animation which answers all of the key questions! Watch in full on our YouTube channel 👀👉 youtu.be/LHGZiqOZ_ME 💬 Narrated by Dee Caffari MBE!
Beautiful view of #RRSDiscovery during my third successful attempt to join the #AtlantiS and @uk_osnap expedition #dy181. This time from my home town Oban. Many thanks to coastal connection for the last minute transfer. Scottish Association for Marine Science National Oceanography Centre OSNAP
This morning we deployed a test telemetry mooring. This is an important and new experiment to enable us collecting data from moorings while they are in the water. #dy181 #rrsdiscovery @uk_osnap OSNAP #AtlantiS Scottish Association for Marine Science National Oceanography Centre
Successful day! Recovered and deployed the easternmost mooring of the OSNAP line today. First trial of the telemetry mooring. Each of ~30 buoys had to be attached with 4 brackets to the wire by 7 technicians. Well done team! #DY181 #AtlantiS National Oceanography Centre Scottish Association for Marine Science
Second set of raw data safely recovered and mooring redeployed to measure currents, temperature, pressure and salinity for another 2 years. Only one mooring left to extend Scottish Association for Marine Science Rockall Trough Transport time series to 10 years. #DY181 #Atlantis #RRSdiscovery National Oceanography Centre
We did it! Today we celebrate 10 years of raw data for the Rockall Trough transport time series. An important milestone to understand the climate relevant northward transport of warm water masses into the Nordic Seas. #DY181 #RRSDiscovery Scottish Association for Marine Science National Oceanography Centre
This morning Rockall greeted us in the flat and sunny sea at CTD station A. Great day to take a break from the mooring work and concentrate on CTDs. #DY181 Rockall Island #RRSDiscovery #AtlantiS Scottish Association for Marine Science National Oceanography Centre @uk_osnap OSNAP
We are moving west. Today we successfully turned around an ADCP mooring west of Rockall Bank and perform communication test with a telemetry BPR from Sonardyne which we plan to deploy later in the Iceland basin. #DY181 #RRSDiscovery #AtlantiS Scottish Association for Marine Science National Oceanography Centre @uk_osnap
Anchor drop of IB5. With that we successfully turned around our 6th mooring. Two more to go! #DY181 #RRSDiscovery #AtlantiS Scottish Association for Marine Science National Oceanography Centre @uk_osnap OSNAP
Deployment of a telemetric drift free bottom pressure sensor in the Iceland basin. Via the ships USBL we are able to watch live how the sensor free falls to the bottom. How cool is that! #DY181 #AtlantiS #RRSDiscovery Scottish Association for Marine Science National Oceanography Centre OSNAP Sonardyne
Last tall mooring deployment of #DY181. Only one mooring recovery left to complete 10 years of data for the upper, warm and salty northward flow of the #AMOC through the OSNAP line. #RRSDiscovery #AtlantiS Scottish Association for Marine Science National Oceanography Centre
Today was the final big mooring. At some stage in the past 2 years, it became tangled in a fishing line. The technicians and deck crew did an amazing job at recovering the mooring instruments and the plastic long line! #DY181 National Oceanography Centre Scottish Association for Marine Science OSNAP
Today our 2nd telemetry mooring test started. Our buoy ‘FLOATY’ was used as simulator for autonomous robotics. Via satellite the team at #RRSDiscovery and even at National Oceanography Centre Southampton successfully communicated and downloaded data from two moored instruments. Scottish Association for Marine Science #DY181
That is the final UK Argo float deployed on #DY181 which marks also the end of science. Thanks to everyone on board of #RRSDiscovery for this very successful expedition exceeding every expectations. 10 years of NAC data are ready to get analysed #AtlantiS Scottish Association for Marine Science National Oceanography Centre
